    a new world
    A New World

    WOMAN 1:
A new world calls across the ocean
A new world calls across the sky
A new world whispers in the shadows
Time to fly, time to fly

    MAN 2:
    It's about one moment
The moment before it all becomes clear
    And in that one moment
You start to believe there's nothing to fear
    It's about one second
And just when you're on the verge of success
    The sky starts to change
And the wind starts to blow
    And you're suddenly a stranger
There's no explaining where you stand
    And you didn't know
That you sometimes have to go
    'Round an unexpected bend
    And the road will end
    In a new world

    WOMAN 1:
A new world calls for me to follow
A new world waits for my reply
A new world holds me to a promise
    Standing by, standing by

    WOMAN 2:
    It's about one moment
That moment you think you know where you stand
    And in that one moment
The things that you're sure of slip from your hand
    And you've got one second
To try to be clear, to try to stand tall
    But nothing's the same
And the wind starts to blow
    And you're suddenly a stranger
    In some completely different land
    And you thought you knew
But you didn't have a clue
    That the surface sometimes cracks
    To reveal the tracks
    To a new world

    MAN 1:
You have a house in the hills

    WOMAN 2:
You have a job on the coast

    MAN 2:
You find a lover you're sure you believe in

    MAN 1:
You've got a pool in the back

    WOMAN 2:
You get to the part of your life

    MAN 2:
You hold the ring in your hand

    MAN 1:
    But then the earthquake hits

    WOMAN 2:
    And the bank closes in

    MAN 2:
Then you realize you didn't know anything

    WOMAN 1, WOMAN 2, MAN 1, & MAN 2:
Nobody told you the best way to steer
When the wind starts to blow

    MAN 1:
    And you're suddenly a stranger

    WOMAN 1, WOMAN 2, & MAN 2:
    All of a sudden

    WOMAN 1, WOMAN 2, MAN 1, & MAN 2:
You life is different than you planned

    MAN 1:
And you'll have to stay 'til you somehow find a way

    WOMAN 1, WOMAN 2, MAN 1, & MAN 2:
To be sure of what will be
    Then you might be free

    WOMAN 1:
A new world crashes down like thunder
A new world charging through the air

    WOMAN 1 & MAN 1:
A new world just beyond the mountain

    WOMAN 1, WOMAN 2, & MAN 1:
    Waiting there, waiting there

    WOMAN 1, WOMAN 2, MAN 1, & MAN 2:
A new world shattering the silence
There's a new world I'm afraid to see
A new world louder every moment
Come to me, come to me!

it's the end of the world as we know it- and i feel fiiiiiiiiine
so- my apprenticeship is over in less than 2 weeks. it is unreal that a whole year has gone by so quickly. but it is exciting too (although at times it does feel like the only thing that i've gained is several unwanted pounds and a considerable amount of debt).

now it is time to find a future....

"...I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story.
From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked. One fig was a husband and a happy home and children, and another fig was a famous poet and another fig was a brilliant professor, and another fig was Ee Gee, the amazing editor, and another fig was Europe and Africa and South America, and another fig was Constantin and Socrates and Attila and a pack of other lovers with queer names and offbeat professions, and another fig was an Olympic lady crew champion, and beyond and above these figs were many more figs I couldn't quite make out.
I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn't make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet. Which Harry Potter Character Are You?

You are part Fred and George. You're a joker at heart, but when push comes to shove, you know what's important.
You are part Hagrid. You're an outcast with a heart of gold. Despite your own problems, you always find time to help those in need.

    when you gonna realize??
The Last Time I Saw Richard
    by Joni Mitchell

The last time I saw Richard was Detroit in '68
And he told me all romantics meet the same fate someday
Cynical and drunk and boring someone in some dark cafe
You laugh he said you think you're immune
Go look at your eyes they're full of moon
You like roses and kisses and pretty men to tell you
All those pretty lies pretty lies
When you gonna realise they're only pretty lies
Only pretty lies just pretty lies

He put a quarter in the Wurlitzer and he pushed
Three buttons and the thing began to whirr
And a bar maid came by in fishnet stockings and a bow tie
And she said "Drink up now it's gettin' on time to close"
"Richard, you haven't really changed" I said
It's just that now you're romanticizing some pain that's in your head
You got tombs in your eyes but the songs you punched are dreaming
Listen, they sing of love so sweet, love so sweet
When you gonna get yourself back on your feet?
Oh and love can be so sweet Love so sweet

Richard got married to a figure skater
And he bought her a dishwasher and a coffee percoator
And he drinks at home now most nights with the TV on
And all the house lights left up bright
I'm gonna blow this damn candle out
I don't want nobody comin' over to my table
I got nothing to talk to anybody about
All good dreamers pass this way some day
Hidin' behind bottles in dark cafes dark cafes
Only a dark cocoon before I get my gorgeous wings and fly away
Only a phase these dark cafe days

    smiley
today i went to buy lunch and the woman who checked me out was CLEARLY not enjoying her job or anything else happening to her in life. so i kept my head down, said a meek "hello" and paid for my food- as i was leaving though i looked up at her and in HUGE letters on her arm she had tattooed the word "smiley".....

    .....hilarious.

    bullied into paying my bill
last night, i got a phone call from a VERY angry woman who made me pay my credit card bill on the phone.

i definitely feel bullied and not happy about it at all (and i'm quasi-worried about my identity being stolen).

    sooooo shady.

I do love the Joni Mitchell

    All I Want
    by Joni Mitchell

I am on a lonely road and I am traveling
    Traveling, traveling, traveling
Looking for something, what can it be
Oh I hate you some, I hate you some, I love you some
Oh I love you when I forget about me

I want to be strong I want to laugh along
I want to belong to the living
Alive, alive, I want to get up and jive
I want to wreck my stockings in some juke box dive
Do you want - do you want - do you want to dance with me baby
Do you want to take a chance
On maybe finding some sweet romance with me baby
    Well, come on

I am on a lonely road and I am traveling
Looking for the key to set me free
Oh the jealousy, the greed is the unraveling
    It's the unraveling
And it undoes all the joy that could be
I want to have fun, I want to shine like the sun
I want to be the one that you want to see
I want to knit you a sweater
Want to write you a love letter
I want to make you feel better
I want to make you feel free
I want to make you feel free

    sending mixed signals
last night on my way home from cheryl's, there was a boy on the metro who, while leaving the metro car, either winked at me and "blew me a kiss" (in the cool, flirty, urban way that the kids are blowing kisses now a days) ooooor he was trying to tell me that i needed to bleach my mustache.

i like to believe that he was blowing me a kiss.... but i stopped and bought facial bleach on the way home.

    the end of an era
Well, it is official, my bgnet email account has been deleted.

I was quasi-prepared for this occasion (I knew that it had to happen one day) but still am just kind of sad and worried that someone will try to email me at that address ( I wish that they had a forwarding system).

That's my story- it's just so hard to believe that it's already been a year since I graduated.

    chocolate for breakfast
This morning I opted NOT to go to the gym and, instead, to eat a huge block of chocolate.

I feel sick to my stomach- but received a round of applause from the "shop boys" for getting to work on time.

    still oh-so-happy
this morning i was in a kind of melancholy mood and was brushing my teeth (brushing my teeth takes longer when i've eaten a pound of jelly beans for breakfast) and remembered this time when steve and i had had an especially frantic end to the work day and ended up going to this bar, Trios after escaping without getting yelled at (which is definitely something to celebrate).

so we were at the bar and just sat and talked and i was drinking my beer out of the bottle and when i had finished my 2nd i went up to go and make a phone call or something (i was supposed to meet up with nick eventually and i think i was trying to get in touch with him). point being, when i got back to the table steve held up his beer and said "cheers" gesturing for me to toast him and i was so sad because i didn't have any left and i said something like. "mine's empty" and he was like, "are you sure?" and i picked up the bottle to show steve that it was CLEARLY empty and IT WAS TOTALLY FULL AND COLD AND FABULOUS!

it was a moment of wonder and surprise and remembering it this morning STILL made me smile with delight!

work, work, work, work, work, work
Tumble outta bed and I stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition
Yawnin', stretchin', try to come to life
Jump in the shower and the blood starts pumpin'
Out on the streets the traffic starts jumpin'
And folks like me on the job from nine to five

    Chorus:

    Workin' nine to five
What a way to make a livin'
    Barely gettin' by
It's all takin' and no givin'
    They just use your mind
And they never give you credit
    It's enough to drive you
    Crazy if you let it

Nine to five, for service and devotion
    You would think that I
    Would deserve a fair promotion
    Want to move ahead
But the boss won't seem to let me
I swear sometimes that man is out to get me
    Mmmmm...

    They let your dream
    Just a' watch 'em shatter
    You're just a step
    On the boss man's ladder
But you got dreams he'll never take away

In the same boat with a lot of your friends
Waitin' for the day your ship'll come in
    And the tide's gonna turn
And it's all gonna roll your way

    2nd Chorus:

    Workin' nine to five
What a way to make a livin'
    Barely gettin' by
It's all takin' and no givin'
    They just use your mind
And you never get the credit
    It's enough to drive you
    Crazy if you let it

    Nine to five, yeah
They got you where they want you
    There's a better life
And you think about it, don't you?
    It's a rich man's game
No matter what they call it
    And you spend your life
    Puttin' money in his wallet

    3rd Chorus:

    Nine to five
What a way to make a livin'
    Barely gettin' by
It's all takin' and no givin'
    They just use you mind
And they never give you credit
    It's enough to drive you
    Crazy if you let it

    Fade:

    Nine to five, yeah
They got you where they want you
    There's a better life
And you dream about it, don't you?
    It's a rich man's game
No matter what they call it
    And you spend your life
    Puttin' money in his wallet

My Old Man Printer-friendly version of this lyric
    by Joni Mitchell

    My old man
He's a singer in the park
He's a walker in the rain
He's a dancer in the dark
We don't need no piece of paper
    From the city hall
    Keeping us tied and true
    My old man
    Keeping away my blues

He's my sunshine in the morning
He's my fireworks at the end of the day
He's the warmest chord I ever heard
Play that warm chord, play and stay baby
We don't need no piece of paper
    From the city hall
    Keeping us tied and true
    My old man
    Keeping away my blues

    But when he's gone
Me and them lonesome blues collide
    The bed's too big
    The frying pan's too wide

    Then he comes home
And he takes me in his loving arms
And he tells me all his troubles
And he tells me all my charms
We don't need no piece of paper
    From the city hall
    Keeping us tied and true
    No, my old man
    Keeping away my blues

    But when he's gone
Me and them lonesome blues collide
    The bed's too big
    The frying pan's too wide

    My old man
He's a singer in the park
He's a walker in the rain
He's a dancer in the dark
We don't need no piece of paper
    From the city hall
    Keeping us tied and true
    No, my old man
    Keeping away my lonesome blues
